“Books may well be the only true magic.” 💫 Alice Hoffman
If books are magic, then book subscription boxes are the enchanted vessels that contain these wonders 😍
Welcome to my unboxing of Mermaid Crate “Monsters and Royals” box 🧜🏼♀️ I knew I had to get one of their New Year specials as soon as possible, and I was proven right because the batch sold out in less than 24 hours! If you have been following this blog for some time, you might already know that Mermaid Crate is one of my favorite subscriptions (see previous post). It is one of the premiere book subscription boxes here in the Philippines, and the mermaids bring only the best YA Fantasy titles to Filipino bookworms.
Now let’s move on to the unboxing!!
The January theme is Monsters and Royals–and we are taken to the fantastical worlds of Grishaverse, A Darker Shade of Magic, The Cruel Prince, Percy Jackson and more.
I love getting unique items from book boxes. This Kingmaker pop socket is just the first of many from this box. Although made for the fearless fans of the insanely popular novel The Cruel Prince, this cool pop socket is definitely something everyone would enjoy.
Here we have not just one, but two bookmarks!! The mermaids are really generous!
The Monsters and Royals theme bookmark is by Mermaid Crate’s official theme artist Aria of @airadii
The King of Scars-inspired bookmark is by Mermaid Crate’s official bookmark artist Alarise of @_madebyalarise
A super adorable Nikolai Lantsov pillow! Who would have thought we could fit this cutie in a box 😍
A Camp Half-Blood apron for all the demigods out there!
The gorgeous but badass ladies of the Night Court from A Court of Thorns and Roses are here to accompany you on your next read! Magnetic bookmarks are designed by Sumek of @luckgeeline
The lone thorn among the roses, Nikolai Lantsov is dashing in this magnetic bookmark designed by Pandam PH @pandam_ph
This Captain of the Night Spire print for fans of A Darker Shade of Magic is designed by the mermaids themselves. ADSOM has been on my TBR for so long, and now I’m even more excited to read it. ⚓️
Finally, we have the Book of the Month (BOTM)! 💕 One of the highly anticipated January releases– King of Scars by the legendary Leigh Bardugo.
Just look at that naked cover! Who wouldn’t fall for that??
I should be honest and tell you that I have yet to finish Grishaverse. I’ve only read Shadow and Bone. But what I’m really excited for is the Six of Crows duology. Given my TBR Tower of Doom is still looming over me, I don’t really know when exactly I’ll get to open this beauty. But you know how it is. Fellow bibliophiles would understand 😅
So that’s it! I hope you enjoyed this unboxing as much as I did. Do you have any favorite item? Let me know in the comments!

King Of Scars Synopsis
Nikolai Lantsov has always had a gift for the impossible. No one knows what he endured in his country’s bloody civil war—and he intends to keep it that way. Now, as enemies gather at his weakened borders, the young king must find a way to refill Ravka’s coffers, forge new alliances, and stop a rising threat to the once-great Grisha Army.
Yet with every day a dark magic within him grows stronger, threatening to destroy all he has built. With the help of a young monk and a legendary Grisha Squaller, Nikolai will journey to the places in Ravka where the deepest magic survives to vanquish the terrible legacy inside him. He will risk everything to save his country and himself. But some secrets aren’t meant to stay buried—and some wounds aren’t meant to heal. (Goodreads)
