“Time is standing still / and I am waiting for someone to find me.”
Nocturnal is a collection of words and imagery inspired by darkened skies and sleepless nights. it is a journey of healing and self-discovery whether love stays or leaves. it is dreaming with your eyes wide open while the rest of the world is hiding. (Goodreads)
My father died peacefully in his sleep, after living a full and happy life. I know this. He has been bedridden for a couple of years, and when he felt The Stranger knocking he still had the energy to call on all of his children and grandchildren. I visited him on a Thursday and on Friday, he was gone. The best way to go, if you ask me. I am grateful. But I also feel as if I have been inadequate as a daughter and provider. I felt I should have done more, given more, fought more. I guess a child just can never give back enough to a loving parent. I feel somehow like I have ran out of time. This will always be my burden.
When he passed away, there was so much to do. Funeral arrangements, transportation (I lived 3 hours away from the family home), childcare, catering, coordination of relatives, etc. Those were days made of sleepless nights and clutters of papers to be signed. After everything, I just wanted silence. I turned to books for refuge, as I usually do. Books are truly the best companions. They do not ask questions, they just wait patiently and they just give and give and I read and read and read.
The book I am sharing with you all in this post came to me at a perfect moment in my life. My father has said his final farewell, and I was floating in a cloud of sadness. Wilder’s lovely poetry gave eloquence to the chaos of my grief.
This poetry collection served as an anchor for me, and really helped me get through the feelings of loss and heartache. The pages are filled with beautiful artworks with a gorgeous dark vs. light theme. The collection bravely talks about loss, grief and self-discovery.
I highly recommend this for anyone who needs comfort or motivation, and for all who loves good poetry and art. I hope this brings light to your darkness, too.
Big thanks to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for providing a copy of this wonderful book in exchange for an honest review. The collection is set to be released on May 7th, 2019.
